Create Halloween decorations: 5 templates and DIY ideas

With the evenings getting darker, pumpkins lighting up neighbourhoods, and shelves lined with sweets; it can only mean one thing: Halloween is on the horizon.

Halloween is the perfect time of year to channel your creative side and create some spooky decorations. Whether you’re staying home binge-watching Halloween movies, going to a dress-up party, or trick-or-treating; Halloween decorations will certainly add to the spirit.

You can of course buy decorations for Halloween but if you’d like to save money and create something unique, then you can make decorations for Halloween yourself. This is easy with our free templates, but of course, you can also do it yourself. Below are 5 top tips for fun Halloween craft ideas.

1. Print out Halloween figures or Halloween stickers

A fun and easy craft idea is to print off our classic Halloween figures with this downloadable template with Halloween figures. Once they’re printed out, you can cut them out and place them wherever you like. Stick them onto your Halloween cards or invitations to your party, or onto a lollipop stick to have a spooky sidekick to bring trick-or-treating! Why not create a Halloween garland with several spooky characters to stick onto your wall or front door!

Did you know that you can easily make your own Halloween stickers? Print out our spooky Halloween sticker sheet that’s free to download. Once downloaded, print the sticker sheet on photo sticker paper, such as glossy photo paper. Sticker sheets have an adhesive layer that can be peeled off and are suitable for any inkjet printer. After printing, you can easily cut the stickers to size.

2. Create a custom Halloween postcard template

With this customisable, Halloween-themed postcard, you can invite friends or family to your Halloween party. Download the postcard and print the template double-sided on white paper. On the back, you have enough space for the address. The template is A6 in size, the standard size of a postcard. If you want to print in A6 you need to change the settings of the printer. If you print on A4 paper, you’ll have to crop the card again.

The thicker the paper, the better the card will be, but keep in mind that not every printer can handle a heavy paper weight, so you’ll need to check the specifications of your printer. After printing, the decorating can begin. With coloured pencils or markers, you can decorate the Halloween card to your taste.

3. Create a Halloween window decoration

Another simple but effective idea is to decorate your windows for Halloween. This way everyone who walks by can enjoy, or fear your decorations! Wish everyone a happy Halloween by writing on the window with a chalk marker or draw a pumpkin or a witch on the glass. If you don’t want to draw freehand, our free drawing templates (see above) are also perfect for window decoration. Stick the drawing template to the outside of the window with adhesive tape, then trace the window drawing with a chalk marker on the inside of your window. Your Halloween window drawing is now safe from the elements on the inside.

4. Decorate a Halloween pumpkin

Pumpkin carving is a go-to activity for many at Halloween. Pumpkins don’t always have to be carved with spooky faces! You can easily create stylish pumpkins with paint and glitter. Before painting the pumpkins, it is important to clean them well and dry them with a cloth. You can then paint the pumpkin in whichever colour you like. Sprinkle loose hobby glitter over the pumpkin if the paint is not completely dry. This way the glitter will stick nicely. Finally, finish with some googly eyes or draw some eyes with paint markers to really bring your pumpkin to life!

5. Use lighting to create a Halloween atmosphere

Another great way to bring Halloween into your home is through the use of lighting. Spooky lighting can complement your Halloween decorations. You can use candles to dim the lighting or use some Halloween lights. If you don’t have any specific Halloween lights, you can always bring the Christmas lights down early! Create a creepy atmosphere by letting light creep out from under the couch or behind the cupboard, for example. Complete the atmosphere with some spooky music!

Now, you have all the tools you need to create the best Halloween decorations. All you need is a printer with sufficient ink or toner, printing paper and scissors. Simply print our free templates or go freehand and create your own unique Halloween decorations! If you need to top up on ink cartridges, you can save with our 123ink own-brand cartridges. We have a 10% discount on our own-brand ink cartridges until October 31st so you can save even more.
