The most common HP error codes
What does error message 02 mean on my HP printer?
HP error code 02 is related to the printer cable. Unplug the cable from the printer, wait a moment, then plug it back in securely. Restart the printer and check whether the error has cleared. If the error message is still showing, replacing the printer cable may solve the problem. If your printer’s error code is not above, then you should take a look at our table below. IT contains a list of more HP error codes and possible solutions. Sometimes, an error message has a different meaning for each printer model, so several solutions could be possible. Feel free to try them all!| Code | Problem | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| 02 | This error code is related to the printer driver or cable. | Unplug the printer cable, then plug it back on. Restart your HP printer. If the error persists, a new printer cable may be the solution. It’s also worth updating your printer drivers. If you’re still seeing the error code, it could be a hardware problem. |
| 10 | The printer cannot read the toner or cartridge chip. | Restart the printer and reinsert your toner/ink cartridge. If that doesn’t help, there may be a hardware problem. |
| 11 | There’s no paper left in the printer. | Fill the paper tray with paper. If the paper tray is not empty, there is a problem with the paper sensor. Check if the sensor is dirty or broken. You can consult your printer’s manual to find its location. |
| 12 |
A cover is open or one of the cartridges is not installed correctly. |
Reinstall your cartridges and check that all printer covers are closed. |
| 13 |
Paper is stuck inside the printer. |
Gently pull the paper out with both hands, keeping it as straight as possible to avoid tearing it. |
| 14 |
No cartridge is installed or your printer does not recognise the cartridge. |
Remove and reinstall the cartridges. If that doesn’t work, reset the printer without the cartridges and reinstall them after the reset. |
| 16 |
The toner is (almost) empty. |
Order new HP toners and replace the empty ones. |
| 20 21 |
Your print job exceeds your printer’s memory capacity. |
Your print job needs to be reduced in size. You can do this, for example, by simplifying the document or reducing the dpi. Does this happen often? You could also consider installing additional memory in your printer. Does the problem persist? Try a different printer driver. You can download one from your printer manufacturer's support website. |
| 22 |
There is a communication problem between your printer and computer. |
Check that the cable is properly connected at both ends. Try using a different computer port. If this doesn’t solve the problem, try connecting it in a different way. If the problem persists, the issue may be with the hardware. |
| 24 25 |
Too many print jobs have been sent to the printer. As a result, the printer’s print queue memory is too full. |
Remove documents from the print queue. You can also try reducing the size of the print jobs sent to the printer. This will allow more jobs to be placed in the queue. |

This code appears in case of a PostScript firmware error. |
Trying printing a different PostScript file or repositioning the PostScript SIMM. For more information, consult your printer’s manual. |
| 30.1 |

Press the Select button on your printer. If the error code persists, there may be a hardware fault. |
| 40 |
The connection between your printer and the computer is interrupted due to a data transfer error. |
Check the connection settings and make sure all cables are properly connected. In some cases, it’s helpful to press the Select button. Unfortunately, some data may be lost in the print queue and you may have to reprint some pages. |
| 41/49 |
This message is caused by a temporary error in the printer engine. |

Depending on the HP printer model, this could also indicate a firmware issue. Updating the firmware and restarting the printer should resolve this problem. |
