Choosing between an inkjet printer or laser printer

Without a doubt, the most commonly used printers in the home and office are inkjet printers and laser printers. When you are choosing between these printers, it is important to consider what your printer needs are, such as the type of documents, the printing volume and so on. Printing costs could be another thing to consider as they can vary with different printers.

Here are the main differences between inkjet and laser printers:

Inkjet printer Laser printer
Uses ink cartridges, filled with liquid ink Uses toner cartridges, filled with toner powder
Can produce high-quality photo prints Better suited to printing text documents
Print speed is usually 10 - 33 ppm (prints per minute) Print speed if usually 20 - 40 ppm (prints per minute)
Higher cost per page, ink cartridges need to be replaced more often Lower cost per page, toner cartridges have a high printing capacity
Less expensive to buy initially Hight cost initially, especially for colour laser printers

If you’re still unsure and would like some more information on the differences between these printers, read our blog Inkjet printers vs. laser printers.

Common printer features to look out for

When you are searching for a new printer, you might have some specific printer features in mind. These can vary depending on the type and model of the printer, but there are some common features that you will see in a range of printers. It is important to know what you’re looking for so you can narrow down your printer selection.

Here are some common printer features you will see:
  • Colour printing: Knowing whether you want to print in black and white, or in colour, is something you should determine when buying a new printer. A mono laser printer will allow you to print in black and white only, making them ideal for text documents, while colour laser or inkjet printers will print in vivid colours, making them ideal for images and photography.
  • Duplex printing: This will help you reduce time and paper costs as it allows automatic double-sided printing.
  • Connectivity: Do you want your printer to connect via USB or Ethernet? Are you looking for a WiFi printer or Bluetooth printer? Thankfully, some printers can connect in a number of ways so if you're looking for a printer like this, you should have no difficulty.
  • Mobile printing: Another way to connect to your printer is via your mobile. This is becoming increasingly popular and is a nice option if you don’t have a laptop or computer to print from.
  • Print speed: The print speed of a printer is measured in pages per minute (or PPM). If you are in a busy work environment and have a high volume of printing, then a printer with a higher ppm might suit you better.
  • Print resolution: This measures the dots per inch (or DPI) and determines the quality and clarity of any prints. 300 DPI is considered to be the ideal resolution, but higher resolutions can guarantee higher quality prints. Mono laser printers often have print resolutions as low as 600 x 600 DPI, while colour laser printers typically have a print resolution of 1200 x 1200 DPI or more. Inkjet printers have a much higher DPI as a higher print resolution will be necessary if you are trying to print high-quality photographs.
  • Paper size: Will you be printing A3 (or larger) documents? Then you will need to consider a printer that facilitates this. The paper size will always be indicated in the features.

You may be looking for some more printer features, but these are some of the most common ones that you will come across. On our website, all print features will appear in the ‘Specifications’ tab. As well as this, when you look at the ‘Printer Comparison and Selection Guide’, you will see a list of key features for our favourite printers.

Save on printing costs with our own-brand ink cartridges and toners

Your printing costs will ultimately be determined by whether you purchase an inkjet printer or a laser printer, as the ink or toners you purchase will depend on this. However, one way to save on printing costs is by purchasing our own-brand ink cartridges and toner cartridges. Our own-brand cartridges are filled with more ink and toner powder than the originals, meaning you get more out of each cartridge.

Here’s an example of how much more ink you will get in our own-brand ink cartridges:

Brother LC-123BK black ink cartridge (original Brother) 12.1ml
123ink version replaces Brother LC-123BK black ink cartridge 20.6ml

That’s 8.5ml more ink than the original! You will get much more pages printed when you use our own-brand ink cartridges instead of the originals, saving you more money.

And here’s an example of how much more toner you could get when you switch to our own-brand toner cartridges:

Brother TN-2420 high capacity black toner (original Brother) ± 3,000 pages
123ink version replaces Brother TN-2420 high capacity black toner ± 3,300 pages

Our own-brand toner cartridge contains ± 300 pages more than the original toner! If you haven’t already switched over to our own-brand ink and toners, then what are you waiting for? You will lower your cost per print, as well as saving you some time in the long run. You’ll notice the difference in your pocket almost immediately!

Organise your home or office with a label printer

Label printers are a handy tool for any individual, whether it’s in the home, the office or a larger business setting. Label printers can help improve your organisation and efficiency, as you won’t spend too long looking for any item if it’s labelled! You can label jars and containers, cables, storage bins, craft supplies and tools, files, folders and much, much more - the possibilities are endless and you’ll really see the benefit of owning a label printer. You will find a variety of label printers, such as small label makers or industrial label printers, as well as tapes and labels here!

Common Questions

What is the best printer for the office?

A laser printer is the best printer to have in your office. While the costs of inkjet printers are initially lower, they cost you more in the long run as the ink cartridges are more expensive than toners. Laser printers are better suited to printing text documents, have a much faster print speed and a lower cost-per-print.

What is the best printer for my home?

The best home printer depends on how often you intend to use it and for what purpose. An inkjet printer is perfect if you have small print jobs, while a laser printer is better suited to a high volume of printing. Read our Best home printer blog to find out more about which printer would suit you and your family.

What is the lifespan of a printer?

The average lifespan of a printer can be around three to five years. An inkjet printer may work to its maximum for three years or less, while a laser printer may last for five years or more, but your printer’s life expectancy can mostly depend on the make, model and how often you use it. With proper upkeep and maintenance, some printers may last even longer, but you will eventually need to upgrade your printer.

How can I reduce my printing costs?

That’s easy! You can reduce your printing costs by choosing to purchase 123ink own-brand ink cartridges and toner cartridges. Our cartridges are guaranteed to work to 100% capacity in your printer and are made by an ISO-9001 certified manufacturer, so are of very high quality. We also offer a 100% lifetime guarantee!
